Nonprofit Organizations

RWO attorneys work with the creation and administration of exempt organizations, including both publicly supported charitable organizations and private family foundations.  They assist clients in qualifying for tax-exempt status and advising exempt organizations with respect to maintaining their tax-exempt status, unrelated business income tax issues and compliance with federal and state income tax laws.

RWO works with a variety of nonprofit organizations, including:

  • Publicly supported charities and private family foundations, designated as 501(c)(3) charities by the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Business league and professional associations, designated as 501(c)(6) organizations by the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Neighborhood, athletic and other social welfare associations, designated as 501(c)(4) organizations by the Internal Revenue Service.

RWO attorneys are equipped to file federal tax exemption applications with the Internal Revenue Service and to work with representatives of the IRS Exempt Organizations Department to process those applications in order that the client may obtain the appropriate tax exemption letter.

In addition to the tax related issues, RWO attorneys assist nonprofits with establishing their articles and bylaws, preparation and drafting of contracts with vendors and navigating employment issues.
